Hazelnuts are the fruit of the hazel tree, a shrub in the birch family. The shrubs grow to a height of around 3 to 4 metres. Its native habitat is Europe, but it is also found in North Africa and Asia. In the Czech Republic, the hazel is most often found on the edges of forests, in scrub, by watercourses and around roads. The hazel is quite large, its crown can be up to 10 metres in diameter.
The fruits of the hazel are typical spherical brown nuts that grow singly or more often in groups of up to 5. The nuts are tipped with a small spike at the end and are covered on the other side by a green or greenish-brown covering, which is made up of conjoined bracts. Hazelnuts ripen in late summer.
Effects on human health
Hazelnuts contain around 60 % fat (mainly mono-unsaturated fatty acids), up to 20 % sugars, 13 % protein and about the same amount of carbohydrates. Of the vitamins, vitamins B3, B6, folic acid and especially vitamin E predominate. The minerals are magnesium, manganese and phosphorus. They are relatively low in carbohydrates, but can be supplemented with raisins, dried figs or dates.
The original use of blanched hazelnut kernels was in confectionery. Today they are as widely consumed as any other nut. Because they are roasted, they are more easily digestible and their already delicious flavour is intensified, making them UNDENIABLE. Regardless of whether they are fresh or dried, they should be easy to chew. Roasted they are tastier than raw and for many, easier to digest.
